N3rV0u5 habits~~~
Saturday, September 1, 2007

Many people have nervous habits that they like to break but cannot. They try all sorts of methods but nothing seems to work. Perhaps, they do not try hard enough and have allowed these habits to become a part of them.

One of the most common nervous habits is nail biting. The incidence of nail biting is exceptionally high. As many males as females bite their nails, although females seem more concerned about the problem, probably because of their greater concern about their appearance. According to a survey conducted in America, 45% of teenagers, 25% of college students and 10% of adults over 35 years of age bite their nails! We can conclude that a majority of people are nail biters at some stage of their lives.

Many of these nervous habits start as normal behaviour. Nail biting often starts because of simple irregularities of the nail and the person bites them to keep the nails in shape. Before long the person unconsciously begins to bite his nails every time he is bored. Some people also pick up a habit by imitating others, especially members of the immediate family. That is why some bad habits seem to run in the family.

Habits often begin at a low frequency and gradually increase over a period of months or years. The result is that the habits eventually becomes part of the person and he will soon be oblivious to it. For example, even though the habit is so conspicuous and noticeable to others, the nail biter is often surprised to realize that his fingers are in contact with his teeth. He bites his nails while reading, listening, watching television or even driving without being conscious of it.
